Background
The vision for Stoke Town is:
"Stoke Town is looking forward to a bright new future. By taking a fresh look at our fascinating past, we can build a town for today and tomorrow - a town with a real ambience. We want to create a town with a distinctive retail, leisure, residential and employment opportunities, one that attracts visitors through the creative and contemporary redevelopment of its heritage - including the Spode Pottery works, the railway, canal and Stoke Minster. Enjoying the distinctive Stoke Town identity and easy access to the city centre, people will love to live here, and want to put down roots. Students will spot great potential for a better quality of life and visitors and daytime workers, enjoying our great transport links, will stay longer and spend more money."
Background work to evaluate the future role and function of Stoke Town, focusing on the area defined as an Area of Major Intervention (AMI) by RENEW North Staffordshire, has started in preparation for the completion of the masterplan.
This work highlighted a number of themes, including:
- the need for a revitalised town centre
- the importance of integrating existing and future residential neighbourhoods with the town centre
- the need for investment in the London Road corridor, to ensure the creation of a vibrant residential boulevard linking the regenerated town centre to other the wider Stoke Town area
