Ellgreave Street, Middleport
The Ellgreave Street area improvements’ project was the result of Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment that was undertaken in 2006. This assessment showed the area was sustainable with investment – and a RENEW-funded, £1.1 million programme of improvements is underway in Ellgreave Street. The programme is being delivered by RENEW’s housing association partner in the Middleport and Burslem area, Midland Heart. It has been split into three distinctive elements:
- Face-lifting. 90 (of 96) terraced properties received improvements to the fronts, including new roofs, new front doors, new windows, painting, rendering and replacements front garden walls, side walls and gable ends
- Environmental improvements. Groundwork Stoke-on-Trent has been commissioned to undertake community and school consultation work to create designs for two key sites – the former play area on St Paul’s Street and another site at the corner of Newcastle/Ellgreave streets – that will be developed into open public spaces for use by residents
- Highway improvements. Ellgreave Street is a major ‘rat-run’ for commuters trying to avoid traffic on Newcastle Street. A scheme has been designed by highway engineers to help slow down the through traffic and create a safer, calmer street for all users, especially those on foot - Ellgreave Street is also an important crossing point for children attending a nearby primary school.
The landscaping and highways element of the project involves:
- realigning the junction of Ellgreave Street with Newcastle Street
- implementing traffic calming measures by reducing the width of Ellgreave Street around the Church Square area and installing a speed-hump on Lyndhurst Street
- installing an island crossing point for the scores of children and parents crossing Ellgreave Street when walking to and from John Baskeyfield VC Primary School

Rear Boundary Wall Scheme
Rear boundary wall replacement will be part of a 'light touch' refurbishment scheme for the Maddock Street, Woolrich Street and Morton Sreet area, where residents will receive new doors, windows and rear boundary walls.
Transport Study
A transport study, looking at the causes and possible solutions to some of the area’s traffic and transport issues, is being undertaken. Its findings will be made available as soon as possible.

Extra Care Facility
A planning application for an ‘extra care’ facility – schemes that provide housing and support services for older people – has been submitted and a decision is awaited.

PCT Building on Morton Street
The new primary care building on Morton Street - that will include a GP surgery - is due to be completed and opened to the public later this year. The building is being developed through a partnership between Prima 200 and the primary care trust.
