Background
The Meir neighbourhood has around 2,690 households. In 2003, RENEW North Staffordshire was set up – one of nine housing market renewal ‘pathfinders’ across England established by the Government to improve housing and create better neighbourhoods – and the first steps were taken to plan the future of Meir.
The vision for Meir is:
“To restructure the neighbourhood and create a desirable, suburban mixed-tenure district served by a robust local centre.”
Since the first steps towards making this vision a reality were taken way back in 2003, details of the plan have evolved in response to demand, consultation with residents, and the funds available.
The key objectives of regeneration in Meir are to:
- establish Meir as a sustainable neighbourhood
- retain and strengthen the existing community
- improve housing choice and quality
- improve the urban structure and street pattern
- improve the physical environment
- improve access to jobs, shops, health, community and leisure facilities
- support Meir District Centre
- maximise community benefits in terms of jobs, skills and training
- improve the image and perception of the area
- reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
