Kier Homes intends to submit a planning application for more than 200 new homes to develop the remainder of the site.
Collins and Aikman site phase 1, Mill Rise
Building has now been completed on an ‘extra care’ development, including 60 apartments for older people.
RENEW North Staffordshire is working with local organisations on a comprehensive regeneration programme for Knutton and Cross Heath.
A wide choice of new homes is to be built over the next five years, helping to attract new residents and raising the proportion of privately-owned housing.
RENEW’s development partners will build around 200 new family homes in the area, alongside homes that offer full support for older people and a new health centre.
Clearance nearing completion on the Lower Milehouse estate will allow a change in the layout of the area and allow for further new housing in future years.
Restoration of heritage features on terraces in Knutton village is helping to create a new pride and confidence in the neighbourhood.
Funding has also been secured to make improvements to the local environment. Successful projects completed include parking schemes, the installation of CCTV and security lighting and community gardens.
Charter Road, Cross Heath
RENEW North Staffordshire is funding the creation of a ‘green area’ for local youngsters to play in Charter Road, Cross Heath. More than 20 properties owned by Aspire Housing, RENEW’s housing association partner in the Newcastle-under-Lyme area, were cleared before the housing market renewal programme (HMR) was announced by the Government in 2002. The site had been identified as a potential place to build a new health centre, but as plans were drawn up to locate the new Medical Centre on Lower Milehouse Lane, the Charter Road site was left vacant.
Residents suggested that the area was flattened and grassed over, to provide an area for youngsters to play. The new grassed area is now ready for use.

Engaging with young people
An activity scheme for young people who have been affected by the regeneration programme in the AMI took place earlier this year. Youngsters living in the Knutton and Cross Heath area were invited to take part in a range of outdoor sporting activities and indoor sessions, including T-shirt printing and Nintendo Wii gaming. The pilot scheme was a great success and a similar scheme has also taken place during the summer holidays, with a view to further extending the scheme to take place during the term time during evenings and weekends.
Knutton Lane, Knutton
Plans are being developed to make environmental improvements to areas of Newcastle-under-Lyme that are not affected by the clearance programme.
RENEW North Staffordshire’s housing association partner in the Knutton and Cross Heath Area of Major Intervention (AMI), Aspire Housing, has drawn up a schedule of improvements to 67 properties in and around Knutton Lane. RENEW and Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is joint-funding the £0.5m scheme, which will act as a ‘gateway’ improvement to Newcastle town centre and complement the new college development.
The scheme, which includes parking and boundary enhancements and the installation of low-maintenance gardens, was launched at a community open day in March. Work will start shortly and is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.

Knutton village heritage scheme
Seventy three houses that were once used to showcase the decorative work of a local brick maker, John Nash Peake, underwent a £1.7 million scheme to breathe new life into the area.
Works carried out included repairs to damaged decorative brickwork and tiles using materials that complement and enhance the original features. Chimney pots, doors and windows were also replaced and where appropriate, other architectural features, such as boot scrapers, have been renovated. Many of the houses have also benefitted from new rear alleyway boundary walls and gates.
The project was funded by RENEW North Staffordshire, Newcastle Borough Council, with input from English Heritage.
Collins and Aikman site phase 1 - Mill Rise
Building has now been completed on an extra care development at Mill Rise, adjacent to Morrison’s supermarket. This development provides 60 apartments for older people and a medical centre and pharmacy for the general community. It also hosts and a number of other services including a hairdresser and restaurant.
Aspire Housing, NHS North Staffordshire and Prima 200 North Staffordshire, worked together on the village which provides over 50s the opportunity to continue living independently in their own homes.
Collins and Aikman site phase 2
Kier Homes will be submitting a planning application to develop the remainder of the former Collins and Aikman site. This has proposed that around 210 new homes are built. These will be made up of both family houses and retirement bungalows, focused around a central public space. Kier Homes will deliver this housing development, which has received Kickstart support.
