Regeneration in Knutton and Cross Heath places emphasis on neighbourhood improvements to existing housing, building on the Decent Homes Investment Programme being delivered by Aspire Homes, alongside environmental improvements and improved linkages to the area’s major employment areas and green spaces.
The Area Regeneration Framework covering the area sets out a framework to deliver:
- Relatively limited acquisition and clearance, with acquisition limited to a small number of non-residential properties in Knutton village centre
- Neighbourhood improvements to areas containing 912 properties, with the vast majority of these properties owned by Aspire Housing on the Lower Milehouse, Beasley Avenue, Cross Heath, Cotswold, Parksite and Saints / Moran estates. Twenty private sector properties are identified for Neighbourhood Improvements
- Development of 280 new homes, on two sites close to Knutton village centre. This is in addition to new homes being provided on a number of existing housing development sites across Knutton, Cross Heath and Silverdale
- Improvement to open space at ‘the Wammy’ in the heart of the area, alongside improvements to the Douglas Road area and Silverdale Colliery (as part of wider development proposals)
- Creation of an environmental corridor through the ‘the Wammy’ providing enhanced links between Newcastle town centre and the Apedale Country Park and Heritage Centre
- Improved access into and out of the existing employment areas, especially those off the A34, such as the Lymedale Business Park and Parkhouse Industrial Estate
- Improvements to local transport corridors and the pedestrian and cycle network
