Background
The neighbourhoods of Knutton, Cross Heath and Lower Milehouse contain a mix of housing, industrial and green spaces, and have good access to the villages and open space to the west of Newcastle town centre, including Apedale Country Park.
Knutton, Cross Heath and Lower Milehouse make up the Knutton and Cross Heath Area of Major Intervention (AMI) – which is an area that needs a concentration of resources to help create communities where people will want to live and work.
In the long term, RENEW North Staffordshire hopes to create a better choice of housing, reducing the proportion of housing association properties and encouraging more homes to be built. It will become easier to get around by foot and car, and local shops, services and green spaces will become more accessible.
The vision for Cross Heath is:
“To establish Cross Heath as a sustainable community, with access to local services and well connected to Newcastle Town Centre”
The vision for Knutton is:
“To re-image Knutton as a village, to create a more balanced community”
RENEW aims to:
- build a range of new, high quality housing to improve choice and better meet the needs of local residents, encouraging a more balanced community
- create sites for new residential development and areas of open space
- encourage more people to move to, and stay in, the area
- support an ‘extra care’ facility to offer a mixed community for elderly people and provide quality health services for all local residents
