Repair plans may make mortgages easier

A meeting between Galleys Bank Community Steering Group and consultants Michael Dyson Associates took place on July 26th to give members the opportunity to ask more questions about possible repair options on a pilot house on the estate.

When the Galleys Bank project steering group met on June 8th it discussed which of the five repair options recommended by consultants would be looked at in further detail.

It was agreed that all five repair methods would have to be investigated by mortgage indemnity providers to see if they are likely to achieve mortgageability before a decision could be made as to how the pilot house would be repaired.

Many of the properties on the estate are not mortgageable because of the way  they were constructed and were designated defective under the 1985 Housing Act. This has led to many of the homes on the estate being purchased by private landlords which has led to issues with estate sustainability.

An open day for residents will be held later in the year, with further information about all of the repair methods. No public funding is available at the moment for an estate wide repair scheme like the one that took place during the 1990s.  However, as part of the pilot project, the steering group will look at alternative ways of enabling those home owners who are interested in repairing their home to do so.
