Background
Fegg Hayes is a Victorian village that lies four miles north of Stoke-on-Trent City Centre, on the edge of Monks Neil Park – a major public open space. The village was originally built to house workers from the Chatterley Whitfield coal mine – the colliery is recognised as the best remaining example of a coalmining complex in the UK and is the subject of its own regeneration project after being awarded Scheduled Ancient Monument status by English Heritage in 1993.
Fegg Hayes was identified as one of RENEW North Staffordshire’s five ‘peripheral estates’ in need of a regeneration programme that would not only provide better housing, but also act as a catalyst to boost quality of life for residents and make the most of the area’s heritage.
RENEW’s ‘vision’ for the area is that Fegg Hayes Village will be a ‘desirable area, a place that people will want to live in, work in and visit’.
This involves developing a neighbourhood that offers both new and existing residents:
- a choice of housing types by making the existing Victorian terraces more attractive and building new, eco-friendly homes where possible
- a safe environment that encourages the use of environmentally forms of transport, such as cycling
- opportunities for community activities, play, leisure and recreation
- a sense of pride and ownership in a heritage attraction area that is linked to the Chatterley Whitfield Regeneration Project
