Remer Street

A planning application has been submitted for a new health facility at Remer Street. The new building will house a number of services, including three GP practices, district nurse, schools nurse, podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational health and out patients. A decision on the planning application is due in September 2009.

Improving ‘connectivity’

The proximity of the Cobridge area to the city centre at Hanley is one of its key assets, although current links are weak. Pedestrian, cycle and vehicle links to the city centre should be enhanced, creating more direct and safer routes in.

Waterloo Road is the key corridor through the area, linking Cobridge to Burslem in the north and Hanley in the south. The environmental quality of this corridor and movement for pedestrians, cyclist, buses and private cars should be improved. Hanley Road, a major road corridor forming the eastern boundary to Cobridge area, should also be enhanced to reflect its importance.

Existing sustainable neighbourhoods

There are a number of existing housing areas within the Cobridge area that have been identified as ‘sustainable neighbourhoods’. Because they do not have the same environmental or social issues affecting them as other communities in the area, we are not proposing major change in these areas. They will be monitored, and improved where necessary.

Employment areas

There are a number of employment areas within the Cobridge area that provide valuable jobs. Change is not proposed at the moment, but change in use for these areas must be considered in the context of both the wider housing market and the citywide employment land supply and demand.
