Portland Street area

The terraced streets in the Portland Street area have issues around the poor quality of the housing, low demand and social problems - there are around 80 long-term vacant and abandoned properties.

The next stage of the City Centre North West regeneration programme is to undertake a Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment (NRA) study within the Portland Street area. The process has been explained to the local community, and the assessment is expected to start in September 2009 with completion and recommendations in Spring 2010.

The NRA will look at the condition of properties in the area, which will help RENEW identify and plan the level of future housing investment needed in the years to come.

The NRA will cover three areas - please see NRA map below - that are showing signs of more housing problems. Properties outside of these three areas will be subject to sample surveys of individual properties, so if you live or own a property in this area, it may not be surveyed.

The NRA will be carried out by environmental health officers from the city council, who will use a government method of assessing the condition of properties known as the Housing Health and Safety Rating System. Details of this process can be found at www.communities.gov.uk/housing
