Background
The Cobridge (City Centre North West) area is located between Stoke-on-Trent city centre with Middleport and Burslem to the north – Waterloo Road is the main route into the area.
The area presents both issues and opportunities in our work to revitalise the housing market and create thriving neighbourhoods and stronger communities.
People are moving away, some housing is in poor condition and the area is cut off from surrounding communities by very busy roads. On the other hand, it is in a convenient position close to the city centre and right next to Central Forest Park. And the demolition of the former Churchill Pottery has created a large space with great development potential.
Cobridge is one of RENEW North Staffordshire’s Areas of Major Intervention (AMIs) – which are areas that need a concentration of resources to help create neighbourhoods where people will want to live and work.
Research shows that house prices in the area are below local, regional and national averages, and that a wider choice of housing is needed to cater for the needs and aspirations of existing residents and is attractive to new residents.
RENEW’s regeneration programme in Cobridge aims to deliver improved housing choice and easier access to employment and training opportunities. It will provide a better environment that makes best use of land and capitalises on heritage assets and green spaces to create a distinctive neighbourhood.
RENEW’s ‘vision’ for Cobridge is:
‘To create a popular and diverse area made up of high quality, connected and sustainable residential neighbourhoods supported by thriving employment areas, attractive open spaces and excellent community infrastructure. It will act as a ‘gateway’ to the city centre and embrace its heritage, preserving and enhancing architecture of merit through quality design and development.’
