Background

Northwood is a predominantly residential area immediately to the east of Stoke-on-Trent City Centre. It is separated from the shopping areas of the city centre by Potteries Way. Housing in the area is mainly terraced, with more than 100 vacant homes and some areas of demolition and redevelopment.

It’s an area sited on land affected by mining activity and subsequent reclamation, and there are particular issues of ground stability. The physical features of the area are striking – the land rises steeply from east to west and offers views across the city from its highest point just above Potteries Way.

Northwood Park celebrated its centenary in 2007, and Northwood Stadium is the city’s only municipal sports arena.

Northwood is an area of strategic importance from a regeneration planning point of view, because it is adjacent to the city centre and the extensive redevelopment of the City Centre South area (Etruria, North Shelton and Hanley South, including City Waterside), which includes RENEW’s ‘flagship’ development, City Waterside. So the future of Northwood is linked closely to the development of these areas of the city.

A neighbourhood plan is currently being developed, which will lay down a vision for the future of Northwood.
