Chesterton ‘eco terraces’ project

Six old terraced properties in Chesterton have been refurbished to meet today's housing standards.

Each house was remodelled using a set of core design principles. The new 'eco terraces' are light and airy, with attractive gardens. External changes to the front of the properties were kept to a minimum, so they do not stand out along the street.

The first two homes were completed in May 2008 and were officially opened by TV presenter and environmental campaigner, David Bellamy. Both achieved the Eco Homes 'eco-excellent' standard, which looks at the environmental qualities of new homes and rates them.

Only the most environmentally friendly properties achieve the 'excellent' standard for demonstrating outstanding energy preservation minimal pollution, a green approach to building materials, transport and land use, and water conservation.

The design team is committed to sharing its ideas and experiences with the rest of the industry. A dedicated website has charted the scheme's progress - with regularly updated information, images and a blog. A two-year monitoring programme is in place to assess the value of the changes introduced.
