Stoke home improvements get under way
19 March 2010
Homes on the main routes into Stoke are receiving a Spring spruce-up to kickstart a major investment programme for the town.
RENEW is working in association with Staffordshire Housing Association and Stoke Town Regeneration on a £75,000 scheme which will see smart new boundary walls and attractive environmental improvements to 50 houses in Campbell Road and London Road.
The improvements follow consultations with local residents which have seen more than 90 per cent of homeowners sign up to the scheme.
Work is already well under way, with social enterprise PM Training undertaking the wall-building programme with the help of seven local trainees.
Stoke Town Regeneration Manager Kevin Bell said: “Feedback from the residents involved has been excellent and we are sure this scheme which will make a great difference to the appearance of key routes into the town centre.
“It’s also marvellous to see local folk receiving vital training and playing their part in a project which impacts on their community. I’m sure they will have a great sense of pride in seeing this work come to fruition.”
The environmental improvements are the first part of further investment in Stoke Town. Other plans in the £1 million facelift programme include replacement windows, doors walls and gutters on targeted properties on four main routes into the town.
In addition three properties which have stood empty for a long time have been bought by RENEW and the Empty Properties Team at Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
All three properties will be refurbished for local families to rent through Blue Mountain Housing Association, a subsidiary of Staffordshire Housing Association.
