Red brick: green house

The consultation exercise for Port, Burgess and Harper Street in Middleport has begun in earnest and residents can now give their feedback about the scheme.

The first stage of project will provide full facelifts to the houses on Port, Burgess and Harper Streets including installation of new double-glazed sash windows at ground and floor level, new timber doors in the style of the original, cleaning and repointing of the brickwork, new rainwater pipes and gutters, new tiled roofs and chimney pots to match the originals.

The architects CTD led by Chris Hesketh started on September 1st by surveying the externals and gaining access to any City owned vacant properties to do the internal surveys. CTD and the residents’ friend Mick Brownsword began knocking on doors on September 9th to encourage people to sign up for it and a letter telling residents about the idea and letting them know CTD and team are coming round was posted through doors on September 6th.

The specification for work will be going out soon for tenders to be returned in time for a contractor to be appointed in November. Work will start on site straight after Christmas.

The external heritage-led refurbishment will have a 21st century twist. The internal refurbishments of up to 20 properties next year will include where possible some two-into-one conversions so that RENEW can offer different size properties.

RENEW is are also looking at how it can work with residents to "green" the back alleys and turn it in to a "community lane". This is why RENEW has encouraged residents to sign up to a "grow your own" course introducing people to the very basics of gardening.
