All aboard for Burslem
14 March 2010
RENEW, Burslem Port Project and young workers from PM Training have celebrated a milestone in an ambitious scheme to bring an historic section of canal back into use.
This week saw the first narrowboat in almost half a century moor on the Burslem Branch Canal, at its junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal, thanks to a £46,000 clean-up.
Members of Burslem Port Project have been working for 13 years to develop plans for the canal and clear the half mile branch which leads to Middleport.
Now, thanks to funding from RENEW and manpower from PM Training their hard work is paying off after young people from PM Training began clearing the stretch of waterway last November.
The scheme links in with RENEW’s major regeneration plans in Middleport and the long-term aim is to bring the half mile spur back into use, create a Burslem Port and introduce a wide range of attractions.
